The Election Commission Thursday said seizure of illicit liquor by the excise department in West Bengal has "more than doubled" since last year.
The commission carried out a comparative survey for 2013 and 2014 for the period of March 5 to March 25 which indicated more than twice as much illegal liquor was apprehended.
"Last year 88, 797 litres of liquor was seized while this year in the same period, the quantity is 1,61,462 litres," assistant chief electoral officer Amitjyoti Bhattacharji told reporters here.
Number of arrests made in case of liquor seizure is 208 this year, compared to 107 in 2013.
As much as 360 litres of liquor was apprehended in West Midnapore Thursday.
"The men were ferrying the liquor on three motorbikes. The excise department officials seized the liquor as well as the bikes. No arrests were made as the men fled the scene," he said.
