"Little Police", an initiative by the Goa Police, will help in curbing traffic violations and also reduce fatal road accidents, a minister said on Wednesday.
The initiative involves young, school-going children being familiarised with policing laws, especially those dealing with traffic violations.
"The measure will help convince parents about the need to follow traffic rules," Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar told IANS.
"We have had too many accidents on our roads of late. If the "Little Police" can educate their parents about traffic rules, especially wearing of helmets, it will go a long way in ensuring road safety. It is a long term strategy to reduce road accidents," Parsekar said.
As part of the initiative, police teams will reach out to all schools in the state and organise camps to spread awareness about traffic rules.
In 2014, Goa reported as many as 4,200 road accidents out of which 298 were fatal.
