The terminal building at the Luton airport here was Monday evacuated after a suspicious item was found lying in the security area, an airport spokesperson said.
"All incoming flights have been suspended and the approach road to the airport has also been closed," Xinhua quoted the spokesperson of the Luton airport as saying in a statement.
The decision was taken in consultation with police to ensure the safety of passengers and staff, it said.
Passengers were advised to contact their airlines to find the status of their flights.
"We understand passengers will be frustrated by the delays they are experiencing," the statement noted.
"We are working closely with the police to ensure passengers are not inconvenienced unnecessarily but we must ensure that the safety and security of all our passengers and staff remains our top priority," it added.
