LT. General Sarath Chand on Friday took office as the Vice Chief of Army Staff, an official said.
Before this posting as the Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCoAS), the General was commanding South Western Command.
He will be filling the Vice Chief's post vacated by General Bipin Rawat, who was promoted as the Army chief.
Lt. General Chand, an alumnus of Sainik School in Kazhakoottam lacality, Thiruvananthapuram, was commissioned into the Garhwal Rifles in 1979.
He has served in every important military theatre of India and has been in active combat leadership roles at every stage of command in the Army, an Army release added.
Lt. Gen. Chand will be responsible for ensuring the operational effectiveness of the Army by directly overseeing the functioning of the directorates of Military Operations, Intelligence and Logistics.
