A scientific officer at the Madras Atomic Power Station (MAPS) committed suicide Friday by jumping into the sea, said an official.

N.R. Shivaramakrishnan, 42, was working at the plant operated by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) at Kalpakkam, around 70 km from here.

"The official, working in the health physics section, climbed over the railing of the sea water intake jetty and jumped into the sea around 10.45 a.m. The body was washed ashore nearby," an official of NPCIL, preferring anonymity, told IANS.

He said the official is survived by his wife and two young daughters.

In a statement issued here, the NPCIL said Shivaramakrishnan went to the jetty area with a radiation survey meter and informed the security there that he had come to survey the area.

Suddenly, he kept the equipment down, climbed over the jetty railing and jumped into the sea.

Police are investigating.
