West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday criticised the ransacking at a school and vowed to eradicate from the state the culture of "causing wreckage and destruction of property".
"If anyone thinks they would follow a policy of wrecking and destroying property in the state, they are wrong. I will put a stop to this attitude. This is my challenge, challenge, challenge," Banerjee asserted at a felicitation programme of sports personalities in the city.
A group of miscreants ransacked the building of Lila Devi Memorial Institute Secondary School at Baguihati in northeast Kolkata under the alleged instruction of a local promoter on Friday night. The attackers partially demolished the building roof and ran amok in the classrooms. The promoter has been arrested.
The Trinamool Congress supremo also warned the miscreants that her government was not weak.
"If there is a genuine concern we must take care of that. But such activities will not be tolerated. There is no reason to think we are weak," she said referring to Friday's attack.
Banerjee said the classes have resumed in the school after the primary repair works and assured the people that the state administration is constantly monitoring the situation in the area.
"Police are constantly monitoring the situation in the region. The classes have resumed at the school after the broken roof is temporarily mended using plastic sheets," she added.
