Man attempts to rape sister, arrested

A man was arrested here for attempting to rape his teenaged sister inside their home, police said Thursday.

The incident was reported Wednesday from Mianwali Nagar in west Delhi.

The 21-year-old accused, whose identity is deliberately being withheld to keep the victim from being identified, was arrested just after his mother made a complaint to police about his act.

Police said that at the time of the incident the accused was under the influence of alcohol.

"There was a power cut in the area because of which their mother decided to go to the terrace and sleep there. Meanwhile, the accused went over to his sister and allegedly began disrobing the sleeping girl," said a police official, as per the victim's statement.

The 16-year-old girl, a class 11 student at a local government school, awoke and began screaming for help.

"Their mother ran downstairs to see what the matter was and was told by her daughter about her eldest son's misdemeanour," the official said.

"The woman beat her son after dragging him onto the street before calling the police and handing him over to them," said the official.

According to the police, the accused has been arrested under the relevant section of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and molestation.
