Man jumps to death from Gurgaon building's 19th floor

Amid high drama for around four hours in the presence of police and fire-fighters, a 20-year-old man on Monday jumped to his death from the 19th floor of a building here, claiming he was thrashed by his landlord, and urging police to punish him.

Satyawan Verma, who hailed from Rajasthan's Hanumangarh district, jumped from the Hibiscus Tower-2 in Sector 50.

Verma, who was unmarried, lived in a rented accommodation in nearby Tigra village with his elder brother. He worked for an electrical contractor.

After the man threatened to jump, police and fire brigade officials were called for help.

"We tried our best to save him but failed to do so," chief fire officer I.S. Kashyap told IANS.

He said the man claimed he was thrashed by his landlord, and demanded punishment for him.

"Police called the landlord and slapped him in front of Verma and also said a case has been registered against him but it did not work," Kashyap said.

However, Verma said the man who was slapped was not his landlord.

The officials also tried to serve him soft drinks and snacks but he declined to take these.

After some time, Verma said his elder brother and some of his friends should be called.

"His brother and friends requested him to share the problems, if he had any," Kashyap said.

"In the end, he asked for a cup of tea and then jumped from the building after having it," the official said.

Police said they were questioning the landlord.
