Music mogul Simon Cowell reportedly played a huge part in convincing singer Mel B to leave her estranged husband Stephen Belafonte.

According to a source, Cowell, who has hired Mel B to work on his shows "America's Got Talent" and "The X Factor", had been urging her leave her husband for years, reports tmz.com.

The former Spice Girl star filed for divorce from Belafonte three weeks ago after 10 years of marriage. She has won a restraining order against him amid claims of physical and emotional abuse throughout their union.

As per sources, Mel B would often brush off his concerns and make excuses for unexplained injuries -- but she finally decided to heed his advice.

The source added that she gives Cowell credit for finally getting the courage to end her marriage.
