The German government said Wednesday that it has received information about US intelligence spying on the mobile phone communications of Chancellor Angela Merkel, Xinhua reported.

The German government has requested "an immediate and comprehensive explanation" from Washington, a German government statement said.

"The chancellor called (US) President (Barack) Obama today (Wednesday). She made it clear that she unequivocally disapproves such practices should they be confirmed and deems them as completely unacceptable," the statement added.

"Among close friends and partners, as Germany and the US have been for decades, there should be no such monitoring of communications of a head of government," it said, adding that "this would be a serious breach of trust. Such practices must be stopped immediately."
