A constable of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, seriously injured when separatist guerrillas shot at him in the state's Anantnag district Friday, succumbed to his injuries in hospital, police said.

"Militants shot at a police constable from close range in Bijbehara market in the afternoon, critically injuring him," a senior police officer told IANS here.

The injured constable was brought to Srinagar for treatment but died soon after being admitted to a hospital here, he said.

The guerrilla hit-and-run attack occurred in Bijbehara town, 40 km from Srinagar on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, when people were busy with prayers on the last Friday of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
