Mob lynches two militants in Assam

An angry mob Friday lynched two cadres of a breakaway faction of Garo militant outfit Achik National Volunteer Council (ANVC) in Assam's Goalpara district, police said.

The mob also handed over two other cadres after beating them up in Darangthop village.

The group of four militants came to the village to extort money, after distributing extortion letters among the villagers earlier, police said. The villagers beat up the militants when they arrived.

The dead were identified as N. Sangma and W. Sangma, while the two arrested were identified as Rupak Marak and Ismat Marak.

A pistol, two rounds of ammunition, mobile handsets and some incriminating documents were recovered from the slain militants.

Police said that certain areas in Goalpara district, located along the Assam-Meghalaya border, there have been several cases of extortion by the ANVC (B) and another Garo militant outfit, the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA).
