Modi, Pranab greet Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on birthday

President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on her birthday on Sunday and wished her good health.

The prime minister tweeted: "My best wishes to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Sumitra Mahajan ji on her birthday. I pray for her long life and good health."

Modi is currently on a three-nation tour of France, Germany and Canada.

In his greetings, the President said: "May you be blessed with good health and happiness."

Vice-President Hamid Ansari also wished her good health and many more years in the service of the nation as the speaker.

Mahajan thanked the leaders for their wishes and hoped that the greetings would motivate her to serve the nation better.

Born on this day in 1943, eight-time parliamentarian Mahajan, Lok Sabha member from Indore in Madhya Pradesh, became the second woman speaker of the Lok Sabha after Meira Kumar, who presided over the 15th Lok Sabha.
