Spain's Garbine Muguruza defeated Czech Lucie Safarova 6-3, 7-6(4) in a league match of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Finals here on Monday.
The 22-year-old Muguruza finished her WTA Final's debut in one hour and 56 minutes. This was the first match in the tournament's White Group which includes Muguruza, Safarova, Czech Petra Kvitova and German Angelique Kerber, Efe reported.
"Well, it for sure has been an incredible rise. I think you always have to have it in your mind that you can make good tournaments and achieve great things, otherwise it's not going to happen," Muguruza said after her victory.
"I think I earned my place here in Singapore. I kind of deserve to be playing here. I don't see myself as a favourite, but I've played very well this month, and hopefully I can continue to play well here," she added.
