Muslims across the world observed the holy month of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar which brings the faithful together for daytime fasting, prayers and charitable actions.

Ramadan commemorates the first revelation of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad and its observance is one of the five pillars of Islam. Photographs from around the world offer a glimpse into traditional celebrations in country after country, reports Efe.

Millions of Muslims around the world follow a particular daily routine during Ramadan, starting the day with a meal which is taken before dawn prayer.

Throughout the month, many worshipers devote more time to Quran recitations.

After the morning prayer, observers of Ramadan will abstain from eating, drinking, smoking, sexual activity and negative behaviours until the fourth prayer of the day, Maghrib, which is called at sunset, reports Efe.

What follows is Iftar, the traditional breaking of the daily fast.

Sunni Muslims, adherents to the largest branch of Islam, often take part in a special nighttime prayer, which is popularly observed only in this holy month, although it is not mandatory.

There is a heavy emphasis on charitable gestures during the month of Ramadan. Iftar is often laid out free of charge for the less fortunate, reports Efe.

Also observing Ramadan are members of the Shia faith, the second largest branch of Islam.

After 30 days of fasting, Ramadan gives way to Eid al-Fitr, the feast of the breaking of the fast in which families and friends gather for large festive meals and give each other gifts.
