The new chairman of Myanmar's ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), U Htay Oo, has been defeated in the general elections, the party said on Monday.

U Htay Oo lost to U Khin Maung Yi of the opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) in his bid to retain his seat in the House of Representatives from the Hinthada township constituency in the Ayeyawaddy region, Xinhua reported.

The NLD is reported to be leading in Sunday's general election. The election result is expected to be officially released later on Monday.

The USDP fielded 1,122 candidates and NLD fielded 1,123 for the elections.

A total of 6,038 candidates from 91 political parties and 310 independents contested more than 1,000 seats at three levels of parliament in the elections.
