Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Sunday urged the central government to name Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) after former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who died last week.
The chief minister sent a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in this regard.
Rao said that Kalam served as the director of DRDO in Hyderabad and it was during his stint that the organisation carried out several key research works in defence.
The chief minister also pointed out that Kalam also played a key role in setting up of research laboratories like DRDL, MIDHANI, RCI and ICBM.
The chief minister recalled that Kalam had close association with Hyderabad.
"Naming DRDO after Abdul Kalam will give inspiration to the coming generations and will also be a fitting tribute to the leader by India's defence establishment," he said.
