Prime Minister Narendra Modi Wednesday said both houses of parliament needed to be made free of tainted members and added that decisions in all cases against parliamentarians should come within one year.

"We need to make both houses taint-free. Some members have FIRs against them. The judicial mechanism should execute their cases faster and the judgments can come within one year," Modi said in the Rajya Sabha while responding to a debate on the motion of thanks to the president's address to a joint session of both houses of parliament.

"Many members have cases filed against them because of political reasons. Those who are tainted should go, and those who are innocent should come out clean. We need to tell the world we have no taint on our parliament," he said.

"Once this is done, even the political parties will think before nominating tainted leaders. After cleaning the Lok Sabha, we must clean the state assemblies, followed by corporations," he said.

"No one should be spared, law is same for all," the prime minister added.

According to a report by the Association for Democratic Reforms and the National Election Watch that analysed 541 of the 543 members in the present Lok Sabha, 186 (34 percent) MPs were found to have declared criminal cases against themselves in their election affidavits.

Of these, 112 winners have declared serious criminal cases.
