Auto maker Maruti Suzuki India Ltd's (MSIL) parent company Suzuki Motor Japan (SMC) on Tuesday said it has to work harder to remain market-leader in India where competition is rising with a lot of global players coming in.

"We in both SMC and MSIL have to work hard in improving in areas such as fuel efficiency and safety. Bringing in these kind of improvements will much more appeal the compact car customers," SMC president and COO Toshihiro Suzuki told reporters here.

"We will also have to manufacture or develop superior products which are exceeding the expectations of the customers. We have to strengthen ourselves in these areas," he added.

Suzuki, who is here to unveil the compact SUV Vitara Brezza at the upcoming Auto Expo at Greater Noida, said the company plans to tie up exclusively with component and raw material suppliers to develop better technologies.

"Joint development of future technologies with component and raw material makers seems a more probable option. Whatever technology is required for environment or safety issues, SMC would like to develop its own," he said.
