Netherlands still have a long way to go: Van Persie

Netherlands captain Robin Van Persie was happy with the impressive 5-1 win against defending champions Spain in their World Cup opener but admitted that the Dutch still have a long way to go before lifting their maiden World Cup trophy.

"This is my fifth major tournament and I know how these things work: the euphoria vanishes just as quickly as it appears. So we have to make sure that we hold on to it - not only for the people and fans, but also for ourselves," Van Persie, who scored a brace in the demolition of Spain, was quoted as saying by FIFA.com.

Van Persie, who is now known as the Flying Dutchman especially after his flying header against Spain, said the win was special since Spain had won every title in the last six years. Spain have won the EURO 2008, 2012 and the 2010 World Cup in the last six years.

"Spain have won everything there is to win over the past six years. So to break their streak is fantastic for us. It was an amazing start for our World Cup, and I think we've made a lot of people very happy. I've seen the spectacular footage and images from the celebrations across the world," he said.

Van Persie said that the Dutch should now focus on their next match against Australia slated for Tuesday.

"Now the focus is on Australia, and I think that will be completely different to the game against Spain. They have a very different style and I think we are going to have to adjust our own game to beat them," Van Persie said.
