If you wish to join Twitter, the microblogging site has a surprise for you.

In its first major update in three years, Twitter has freshened up its sign up page and sign up process for new users.

The home screen now features a rotating set of images taken from recent Tweets along with their original captions and links.

According to Twitter product manager Christian Oestlien, the process took months.

Currently, Twitter has 271 million active users and 500 million Tweets are sent in a day.

According to Twitter, it needs to do a better job of getting new users to get immediate value out of the service.

Nearly 78 percent of active Twitter followers are mobile users and 77 percent of the accounts are outside the US.
