The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) on Tuesday announced that its troops have set up base in Iraq.

Defence Force chief Lieutenant General Tim Keating said that the troops who will be training Iraqi forces, are stationed at the Taji military complex, north of Baghdad, NZCity news reported.

Other officers are also stationed around Iraq, but the details of their position are not known.

The contingent is preparing to train Iraqi troops in military skills, including basic weapons training, operations planning and medical and logistics support operations.

The training operation is for two years, with a review after nine months, Keating added.
