Nine dead, dozen injured in Delhi squall

Nine people, including two women, died while over a dozen people were injured in a sudden squall that lashed the capital Friday evening, police said.

The first incident was reported from Najafgarh area in west Delhi where an 18-year-old woman died after an overhead power line fell on her when she was returning home from a nearby market around 5 p.m.

In the second incident, a 20-year-old woman died after an iron sheet slit her neck and later hit her 51-year-old mother's head, leaving her seriously injured, in Vivek Vihar area in east Delhi.

A 24-year-old cab driver died when a tree fell on his car in I.P. Estate area of central Delhi around 5.30 p.m. In another incident, a 26-year-old man died when a tree branch fell on the car in which he was sitting, in Chandani Chowk area in central Delhi.

A 30-year-old labourer died when a tree fell on him in Uttam Nagar area of west Delhi. At the IGI airport, another labourer died when some equipment fell on his head during the squall.

Three people lost their lives when a portion of shed fell on them in separate areas in Seelampur, Shahdara (east Delhi) and Shalimar Bagh (north Delhi).

"Over a dozen people were reportedly injured after several trees fell on several vehicles. A few of them were injured in incidents of wall collapse," said a police officer.
