North American duo Sharon Fichman and Maria Sanchez staged an upset by turning around an early losing streak and taking the women's doubles championship at the ASB Classic tennis tournament in Auckland Saturday.
Canadian Fichman and Sanchez from the United States, beat third seeded Czech-Dutch pairing of Lucie Hradecka and Michaella Krajicek 2-6, 6-0, 10-4 in just over an hour before a packed stadium at the ASB Tennis Arena, reports Xinhua.
Czech Hradecka and Krajicek of the Netherlands, got off to a strong start taking a 2-love lead in the first set before their rivals levelled at 2-2, and then leading again to take the first set in 26 minutes.
However, Fichman and Sanchez found their feet to make a clean sweep of the second set and take the match to a tie-break.
The third set was hard fought but Fichman and Sanchez never lost their lead, eventually breaking clear at 6-4 to take the remaining points.
