Outgoing Delhi Police chief bids an emotional farewell

Outgoing Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar in his last address to the force Wednesday said that at the end of his 13 month tenure he was "both happy and sad".

Teary-eyed, Kumar in a trembling voice said: "After 37 years of the police duty I have a mixed feeling today (Wednesday). I'm both happy and sad."

"I'm happy because I worked with India's best police force and worked 13 months as the Delhi police commissioner. But I'm sad because, as this is the last day today to wear the uniform..."

He also said under his tenure Delhi Police busted a cadre of Indian Mujahideen (IM), which was involved in Aug 1, 2012 Pune serial blast.

"We have filed chargesheet in every important case in my tenure which includes Indian Premier League (IPL) spot fixing scandal, Deepak Bhradwaj murder case, Defence colony five crore robbery case," Kumar said.

Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Bhim Sain Bassi will take charge as Delhi Police chief Wednesday, succeeding Neeraj Kumar.

Neeraj Kumar, a 1976 batch IPS officer, took charge of Delhi Police from B.K. Gupta July 1 last year. His tenure saw the brutal Dec 16, 2012 gang-rape of a young woman, which unleashed unprecedented mass protests in the capital. The woman died while under treatment in Singapore Dec 29.
