Authorities in Punjab's industrial town of Phagwara and nearby areas were on high alert on Sunday after a youth, who was injured in a clash between Hindus and Dalits, succumbed to his injuries.
The youth, Yashwant Kumar Bobby, 19, was declared dead by doctors at the ADMC Hospital in Ludhiana earlier on Sunday, the police said.
Bobby was hit by a bullet on the head in a violent clash between Dalits and Hindu groups in Phagwara, around 130 km from Chandigarh, on April 13.
The clash took place when the Hindu groups objected to posters of Dalit leader Babasaheb B.R. Ambedkar being put up by the Dalits at the Goal Chowk in Phagwara.
The Dalits wanted the Chowk to be re-named as Ambedkar Chowk which was objected to by the right-wing groups.
The clash led to firing and heavy stone pelting.
