A plea seeking 85 percent reservation of seats in 12 Delhi University colleges for students from the city was filed in the Delhi High Court Wednesday.
The petition said due to a large number of applicants from other states "chances of city students getting admission had reduced dramatically".
The plea that came up for hearing before a division bench of Acting Chief Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice Vibhu Bakhru, sought direction to the university to adopt a "new policy for reservation up to 85 percent of total seats for Delhi students in 12 colleges funded by the Delhi government".
The public interest litigation petition, filed by NGO Moksha Foundation through its president Dinesh Lalwani, said Delhi students were denied admission to university colleges due to rush of students from other states.
The court would hear the matter July 31.
The plea said as per a survey only 25 percent of the total seats available in university colleges were allocated to Delhi students.
The plea asked the court to direct the university to adopt a new policy for reservation of upto 5 percent seats for Delhi students in 16 colleges getting funds from both the central government and the Delhi government.
The NGO claimed that Delhi students denied admission in the university were being forced to go out of their own state for higher education.
