Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday called for enhanced handloom use.
Speaking on the occasion of first handloom day at Madras University here, the prime minister referred to the call he gave during his radio programme "Mann ki Baat" where he had given a call to people to buy khadi fabric.
"I asked people to use one item of khadi... I have been informed sale of khadi has gone up by 60 percent after that," Modi said.
"We also now need to give a similar call for handloom. Can we not enhance use of handlooms in our daily life?" he asked.
The prime minister added: "I am told that handloom form 15 percent of total cloth consumption, if we raise it to 20 percent it will give a huge boom."
