Prime Minister Narendra Modi presided over a combined commanders' conference that began on Tuesday morning aboard INS Vikramaditya, stationed about 40 nautical miles on the high seas from Kochi.
Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, apart from the three chiefs of the army , navy and airforce and other high-ranking defence officials, were present at the meeting that was expected to continue till around 1 p.m.
INS Vikramaditya is a modified Kiev-class aircraft carrier that was inducted in the Indian Navy in 2013.
Modi was scheduled to address the meeting and review demands that would come up during discussions.
Before returning to Delhi from the state capital, Modi will meet the Kerala cabinet headed by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.
Modi arrived on Monday on his first visit to the state after becoming prime minister.
