An Uttar Pradesh police constable was critically injured after being shot at by unidentified assailants in Agra, police said on Tuesday.
The incident occurred late Monday night when constable Himanshu Chauhan was on patrol in the Kalindi Vihar area on his motorbike.
Chauhan was accompanied by constable Akhand, also posted in the Etma-ud-daulah police station. He received information about some criminals moving around in the area.
As the two policemen spotted three people on motorbikes, they tried to intercept them. The miscreants opened fire on the constables, injuring Chauhan. They then fled the crime scene, a police official said.
Police officials told IANS that they were trying to trace the assailants.
