A municipal policewoman wounded in a shooting south of Paris Thursday morning has died, media reported.
The policewoman and another person were in critical condition Thursday after a man fired on them with an automatic rifle outside Paris, Xinhua reported citing police.
Earlier reports said two policemen were gunned down. But officials later clairified that in the shooting only one policewoman and a civilian were involved and were injured. The policewoman later died.
The suspect, who was born in 1962 and known to the police due to previous convictions, is still on the run, French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said at the shooting scene after rushing away from an emergency inter-ministerial meeting in Elysee.
The attack occurred around 7.15 a.m. in Montrouge, a densely populated area of Paris.
Thursday's shootout occurred as French authorities are still chasing two brothers suspected of killing 12 people at the office of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris Wednesday.
There is no confirmed link between the two incidents.
