Politicians and Twitterati remembered internationally renowned author and journalist Khushwant Singh, who died here Thursday, aged 99.

Bharatiya Janata Party's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi offered his condolences and wrote: "My condolences on the passing away of noted author and journalist Khushwant Singh. May his soul rest in peace."

Celebrity author Shobhaa De called his death the "end of an era", while anchor-actress Mini Mathur wrote how he took away with him "an era of sassy humour and malice" and that there will be no one else like him.

"Khushwant Singh. End of an era. Only KS could say 'There's no condom for a pen'," wrote De.

BJP leader Vijay Goel extended his heartfelt condolences to his family.

Actor-comedian Vir Das advised everyone to get a Khushwant Singh book.

"We lost a national treasure in every sense of the word today. Go out and get a Khushwant Singh book. It just might change your life," Das wote on the social networking site.

Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan wrote: "Oh no, Khushwant Singh is no more. He made our lives so much richer by his literary contributions."

Author Tavleen Singh wrote: "Khushwant Singh RIP. You will be remembered for long by writers like me who may not have been writers without your support".

Author Amitav Ghosh expressed sadness.

"Very sad to hear of the death of Khushwant Singh - great historian, novelist, editor, columnist, and a wonderfully kind, generous man," Ghosh wrote.
