Calling technology a challenge and a tool for policing, President Ram Nath Kovind on Monday urged the Indian Police Service (IPS) officers to utilise technology for effective policing.

The President said that while technology expands the avenues for crime, it also allows the police to do its duties "with greater efficiency".

He was addressing a group of IPS officer trainees of the 2016 batch from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

"Technology also enables citizens to interact with the police force, and even to lodge a complaint from the home using computer or mobile phones," he said.

Kovind called upon the officer trainees to encourage this process, he said, that the ideal police system is one where the citizen gets his due service from the police without needing to visit the police station.

The President added that the Indian Police Service is one of the pillars of national administrative system and their mandate should be to uphold a common concept of the rule of law and democratic polity.

"In that sense, they are the guardians of not just public order and honest conduct, but of the majesty of the law," he said.

The President called upon the officers to discharge their duties without fear or favour, and without time delays. He said as professional civil servants they should not be afraid to give the political executive honest and unbiased advice. Their holy book and constant guide must be the Constitution, he stressed.
