Paris, April 19 (IANS) An investigation was launched Friday into allegations that former French president Nicolas Sarkozy accepted an illegal financial aid from Libya during his presidential campaign in 2007, Xinhua reported.

Citing a judicial source, the BFMTV news channel said that prosecutors at the Paris court will look into accusations of "active and passive corruption", "influence peddling", "misuse of corporate assets" and "laundering, complicity and concealment of these crimes".

A French-Lebanese businessman, Ziad Takieddine said in December last year that he has evidence that proves Libya financed Sarkozy's electoral campaign six years ago.
