A group of about a hundred people on Tuesday protested outside District Magistrate Nidhi Kesarwani's office here, demanding that President Pranab Mukherjee order a probe into the functioning of EVMs and the results of the just-conducted assembly elections be put on hold till the probe is complete.
"Since you are the custodian of the Constitution so you are requested to order a thorough investigation into the tampering of electronic voting machines (EVMs) by a high-level commission," a memorandum addressed to the President said.
After the decimation of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, party chief Mayawati had alleged that EVMs were tampered with to favour the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
"We have come to know that EVMs are not trustworthy. A few days ago a video circulated on social media showed that machines were showing the result in favour of a particular party whichever button you press," the protestors said in the memorandum.
"You are requested to protect democracy in the country... and put the election results on hold," read the memorandum submitted to the District Magistrate.
