Railway employee repeatedly gang-raped, three held

Three people were arrested while Eastern Railway Saturday ordered a high level probe following allegations by an employee that she was repeatedly raped by four of her colleagues at a city railway yard.

The West Bengal Commission for Women too has taken cognisance of the matter and will seek a report from the railways about the incident that came to light after the woman, a Group D employee, narrated her ordeal of how the four men had been sexually exploiting her for months.

"On the basis of her complaint we have arrested three of the accused. The fourth one is still at large," said Superintendent of Police (Railway) Utpal Kumar Naskar.

An Eastern Railways spokesperson said a high level probe has been ordered and a report will be submitted at the earliest.

State Women Commission chairperson Sunanda Mukherjee held the railways responsible for the "gruesome" incident and said she will be seeking a report from top officials.

"The railways are entirely responsible for the ordeal which the woman had to go through for the last so many weeks. We have taken cognizance and are seeking a report from all top officials concerned including the divisional railway manager," she said.

State Women and Child Welfare Minister Shashi Panja said her department has sought a report from police about the victim's claims that police repeatedly refused to take her complaint and even indulged in loose talk and cast aspersions on her character

"Besides asking police to thoroughly investigate the case, we have sought a detailed report about the whole incident and the alleged bad behaviour of the police officers," Panja said.
