Rajeev Kher will be the new commerce secretary.
Kher, a 1980 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre, is currently special secretary in the commerce department.
He will replace S.R. Rao, who retires Jan 31.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) Wednesday approved Kher's new appointment.
