The Congress on Monday condoled the death of former Principal Information Officer I. Ramamohan Rao and called it a huge loss to the Indian Information Service (IIS) fraternity.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi in a statement expressed condolences and said: "He was a wonderful human being."

Recalling his association with the late former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi said: "He was somebody who understood the landscape and nuances of government communication and was widely admired by friends and colleagues alike."

"The passing away of Rao is a huge loss to the Indian Information Service (IIS) fraternity," she said.

Gandhi also said the Congress party stands in grief with the family of Rao. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family," she added.

Rao, 83, died on Saturday in Medanta Hospital, where he was admitted with renal ailments.

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi also condoled his death and said: "A veteran of the IIS, Rao rose to the pinnacle of his career and embodied the best values of his profession."

"A former PIO, he worked with four Prime Ministers, including my father. My sincere condolences on his passing," the Congress leader said.
