Rare large ovarian tumour removed from 14-year-old girl

In a rare medical case, doctors at a government hospital successfully extricated a large ovarian cyst from a 14-year-old girl, said a medical officer here Wednesday.

The girl, a resident of Wadala, was rushed to the LTMC Hospital, Sion, last Sunday with severe abdominal pain.

Prof. Niranjan Chavan, unit head of the obstetrics and gynaecology department, carried out certain tests which confirmed the presence of a huge para-ovarian cyst measuring 8x4x5 cm.

"She underwent a successful left sided ovarian cystectomy Monday and we also treated her bilateral enlarged ovaries. She has recovered very well after the procedures," Chavan told IANS.

This was the third case of large ovarian tumours in unmarried adolescent girls handled by the Sion Hospital in the past couple of years.

"The incidence of such ovarian tumours is more in recent times due to obesity, hormonal imbalances in young girls due to to bad food habits, junk goods, lack of physical activities, keeping awake till late at night which lead to disturbed sleep cycles, and increasing pollution," Chavan said.

Y.S. Nandanwar, head of department, obstetrics & gynaecology, said that Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), or enlarged ovaries with hormonal imbalances, is a common female endocrine disorder with prevalence ranging from 2.2 to 26 percent.

"The prevalence of PCOS among Indian adolescents is a high 9.3 percent. Preventive measures like lifestyle modification, weight reduction, exercise and physical activity, besides medication help manage PCOS and ovarian tumours," Nandanwar added.

The patient, a Class VIII student, stands 5.6 feet tall and weighs 92 kg.
