A refresher course for college teachers, which will include lectures on "Indian values", was launched on Tuesday by the Centre for Professional Development in Higher Education (CPDHE) of the University Grants Commission (UGC).
"About 200 teachers from various universities and institutions have registered for the programme, which is themed around 'Shiksha Shikshan Evam Bharat Bodh' or 'Education with Indian Values' and 'Indian Culture Thoughts and Thinkers'," said a statement from Geeta Singh, Director, UGC-HRDC (Human Resource Development Centre), Delhi University.
On the inaugural day several educationists and eminent personalities, who included former parliamentarian Mahesh Sharma and Delhi Technical University's Yogesh Singh, delivered lectures.
According to the statement, Sharma spoke on the "Integral Humanism" of Deen Dayal Upadhyaya, while Singh spoke about a "new education pattern" to instil "a sense of belongingness to the Indian society".
The programme will continue till December 19 and will comprise topics related to history, economics, science, management, technology, spiritualism, Indian philosophy and social science.
An academic staff college, CPDHE -- which comes under Delhi University-- was formed in 1987 and is engaged in the task of helping teachers update their skill-sets and acquire new ones. There are several such staff colleges in other universities across the country.
