A retired official of the Uttar Pradesh state transport department shot his wife with his licensed rifle before turning the gun on himself, police said on Thursday. Depression due to financial problems was said to be the cause.
The retired official, Sita Ram Sharma, 64, of Lawyers' Colony, owned two big houses and two cold storages and had invested in a public school also, sources said.
"He appears to have lost a lot of money and investors were not repaying. This had caused him depression and stress," said a source.
His wife was identified as Rama Devi, 60. The couple had two sons and a daughter, two of whom were doctors.
