The Reliance Industries (RIL) on Thursday announced the commissioning of the second phase of its new paraxylene (PX) plant at Jamnagar in Gujarat.

"Reliance is pleased to announce successful and flawless commissioning of the second and final phase of paraxylene (PX) comprising PX crystallizers trains, trans-alkylation and aromatic extraction units at Jamnagar," the Mukesh Ambani-led RIL said in a release here.

"With the commissioning of this plant, RIL's PX capacity will more than double. Reliance will emerge as the world's second-largest producer of PX with about 11 per cent of global production," it said.

The first phase of the plant was commissioned last December. PX is the building block for the entire polyester chain.

The 2.2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) plant is built with technology from British oil major BP, RIL's partner in the D6 block of the Krishna Godavari (KG) basin in the eastern offshore.

With the commissioning of this plant, RIL's PX capacity will more than double to 4.2 MTPA.
