A witness in a case of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots on Thursday told a court that former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar was leading and instigating a mob in one of the incidents in the city.

Testifying as a prosecution witness in the case, Joginder Singh told District Judge Poonam Bamba that Sajjan Kumar was the person leading the mob which went on to kill Sikhs in Sultanpuri area of north Delhi.

The court has posted the matter for further hearing on April 9.

Sajjan Kumar, along with Brahmanand Gupta and Ved Prakash, are facing trial in connection with killings of Sikhs in Sultanpuri during the riots that erupted after the assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by two of her Sikh security guards.

The court has framed various charges, including those of murder and rioting, against the three accused.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed two charge sheets against Sajjan Kumar and others in January 2010 in cases registered in 2005 on the recommendation of the Justice G.T. Nanavati Commission that probed the sequence of events leading to riots.

In December 2018, the Delhi High Court convicted Sajjan Kumar in an anti-Sikh riot case of 1984 related to the Raj Nagar area of Delhi cantonment and sentenced him to imprisonment for the remainder of his natural life.

Sajjan Kumar, who has also quit as a Congress member, has moved the Supreme Court challenging his conviction and sentencing.
