Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon on Sunday said Scotland's Parliament could attempt to block the UK's exit from the European Union.

Sturgeon said "of course" she would ask lawmakers sitting in the parliament to decline to give their "legislative consent" to Brexit, blocking any attempt by the British government in London to proceed with a split from Europe, Efe news reported.

"If the Scottish parliament was judging this on the basis of what's right for Scotland, then the option of saying look we're not to vote for something that's against Scotland's interest, of course that's got to be on the table," the first minister said.

Sturgeon also said she suspected that "the UK government will take a very different view on that and we'll have to see where that discussion ends up".

Sturgeon, whose Scottish National Party has 63 of the 129 seats in Holyrood -- or the Scottish parliament, has already said a second referendum on Scotland's independence from the UK was back on the table.
