Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag and professional boxer Vijender Singh on Sunday appealed to Jat protesters, who have been rampaging in Haryana demanding job reservation for the community, to shun violence.
"The country's defence forces, the sports world and others have made the country proud. We must concentrate and use our energies towards the upliftment of Indian society," the famous Jat cricketer tweeted on a day when the protests continued for the eighth day.
He requested his fellow community-members to stop violence and said demands should be put forth in a constitutional manner. He added: "We are the protectors and not violators."
Vijender Singh posted a video message on his Twitter page that said: "I appeal to my Jat brothers to maintain peace and brotherhood in Haryana. It is absolutely essential for us, our families, our state and our country."
Beijing Olympics bronze medalist boxer Vijender, who belongs to Haryana's Bhiwani town, is currently in Manchester.
