Sanaa, Jan 12 (IANS/EFE) A senior regional police officer in the Yemeni province of Eb was shot dead Monday while on his way to work, the Yemeni defence ministry announced on its official website.
The victim was identified as Abbas Maghrebi, head of the police information centre in Eb, a region that has witnessed in recent months several terrorist attacks carried out by the Al Qaeda affiliate in the Arab country.
Armed men, riding a motorcycle, opened fire at Maghrebi after he left his home for work in Eb, 200 km south of Sanaa.
The attack bore the hallmarks of Al Qaeda, although no group has yet claimed responsibility.
The Al Qaeda often carries out attacks against military officials in Yemen, as well as Shia leaders of the Houthi movement, which has controlled Eb since October.
