South Korea is set to dispatch a 4,500-tonne destroyer to an international naval review in Japan next month, the defence ministry said on Monday.
The guided missile destroyer Dae Joyeong will be sent for the fleet review to be conducted by the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force on October 18, a ministry official said.
The destroyer, built in 2003, carries a complement of 200 personnel and can reach speeds of 28 knots, The Korea Herald reported.
The warship is equipped with anti-submarine and anti-aircraft guided missiles and torpedoes, along with a pair of helicopters and a close-range weapons system designed to shoot down short-range incoming missiles.
This will mark the second time that South Korea has dispatched a navy warship to Japan's fleet review, following the last one in 2002, the ministry said.
In addition to South Korea, India, the US, Australia and France will also join the international naval reviews.
