To curb rampant use of hooters by VIP vehicles, the Bihar government has ordered that vehicles of only the governor and chief justice of the Patna High Court could have sirens, officials said on Monday.
However, sirens would continue in ambulances and fire-fighting vehicles.
"Chief minister Nitish Kumar has directed officials to check the use of hooters in vehicles other than the governor and the chief justice," an official said.
He said the authorities have found misuse of hooters in the name of VIPs, and even some criminals used beacons in their vehicles to commit crimes.
"After the chief minister's order, hooters from all VIPs vehicles would be removed," the official said, adding that a notification would be issued soon.
