Six people have been taken into custody here for attacking elderly Brahmins and forcibly cutting their sacred thread called 'poonool', police said on Tuesday.
An elderly Brahmin priest and a small boy were attacked and their poonool cut allegedly by some members of the Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam (DVK) late on Monday evening.
A repeat of the attack was carried out on Tuesday in some places here, which has sent shock waves among the community members.
The attacks were reminiscent of the hatred towards Brahmins in Tamil Nadu that prevailed many decades ago.
According to police, four DVK activists were taken into custody on Monday and two were held on Tuesday.
The Bharatiya Janata Party's Tamil Nadu unit president Tamizhisai Soundararajan said she was shocked and condemned the attacks.
However, major political parties in the state were silent on the issue.
