Slovakia is sending 50 police officers to neighbouring Hungary to protect Schengen area borders between Hungary and Serbia amid the ongoing migration crisis.

"It's a great representation of Slovakia," Xinhua quoted Prime Minister Robert Fico as saying here on Tuesday.

The officers will be patrolling in fours, together with their Hungarian, Czech and Polish counterparts. A total of 170 officers are coming to aid Hungary, with the Czechs sending 50 police officers and Poland 70.

"Such decision by the Visegrad Group countries surprised the counterparts in the European Union," added Fico.
